Canadian off-site storage for your Proxmox backups.
Your VMs and containers back up to the rack they run in. Give those backups a copy outside it: a Proxmox Backup Server S3 datastore, or vzdump plus restic, landing in a Canadian bucket.
Hosted and Operated in Canada
Two routes, one bucket.
Proxmox Backup Server
Version 4.2 supports S3 datastores. Add Storm as an S3 endpoint with path-style addressing, give it a local cache disk, and schedule backups to it like any other datastore.
Proxmox VE on its own
Point a vzdump job at a local directory, then send that directory to your bucket with restic, which keeps encrypted, deduplicated snapshots.
Off the rack
A backup on the same host or in the same room shares its failures. A bucket in Montreal does not.
Pick a route and type your bucket name. The builder fills in the Storm endpoint, the montreal-1 region and path-style addressing.
proxmox-backup-manager s3 endpoint create storm \
--endpoint montreal-1.buckets.stormdevelopments.ca \
--access-key <your key id> --secret-key <your secret> \
--region montreal-1 --path-style true
proxmox-backup-manager s3 check storm your-bucket
proxmox-backup-manager datastore create storm-backups /mnt/s3-cache \
--backend type=s3,client=storm,bucket=your-bucket
The settings that decide it.
Proxmox Backup Server uses virtual-hosted addressing unless told otherwise, and Storm is path-style only. Set --path-style true and the region to your endpoint's name, montreal-1, and the datastore connects.
Keep the cache disk Proxmox asks for, 64 to 128 GiB on its own disk or dataset.
A copy, not a version history.
Garage, the engine under Storm Buckets, has no object versioning or object lock. History lives in your backup tool, in Proxmox Backup Server's own snapshots or restic's. See the restic guide →
A Canadian copy you can check.
Your bucket sits on RAIDZ3-backed storage in Montreal. Our infrastructure disclosures name the provider and facility behind it.
Storm is a Canadian company with no US parent, so a Canadian region here is also Canadian law. Residency is not sovereignty.
1 TB of Canadian storage. $9 CAD/month.
Start with one terabyte on montreal-1 and add capacity in 1 TB blocks as you grow. You pay for the blocks you choose, rather than each gigabyte used. Uploads and API requests are included. Data transfer never adds an overage charge. See the fair-use policy for transfer allowances and read throttling.
Plan around the backups you keep, including your retention. A block bills the same whether it holds 100 GB or 950 GB.
Before you get started
Storage requests are reviewed by hand. Capacity is subject to availability. Pay by Interac e-Transfer. All accounts must meet our Acceptable Use Policy.
