Why this page exists

Storm hosts other people's data. That means we will eventually receive a copyright notice, a report of something that breaks our Acceptable Use Policy, or a request from law enforcement. When that happens, we act, and this page is where we say what we did.

We are publishing it before any of that has happened, with the numbers at zero, so you can see the shape of the report and judge the process on its own terms rather than taking our word for it later. A page that appears only after the first uncomfortable event is worth less than one that was already there.

What we count

Copyright notices. How many we received, and how many we forwarded to the customer responsible. Canada runs a notice-and-notice regime: a valid notice obliges us to forward it. Forwarding is not a finding that the complaint is correct.

Acceptable Use actions. How many times we acted under our Acceptable Use Policy, broken down by the action taken: content made private, service suspended, account terminated.

Law enforcement requests. How many we received, and how many we complied with. We require lawful process and we notify the customer by default, with the exceptions described in our Privacy Policy.

What we do not publish

Anything that identifies a customer. No names, no account identifiers, no bucket addresses, no dates precise enough to single out one incident.

The content itself. We do not inspect what customers store, and a report about a takedown is not an excuse to describe the material.

Counts of child sexual abuse material reports. Where we become aware of this we report it to the Canadian Centre for Child Protection through Cybertip.ca and to law enforcement, we preserve the data for the period the law requires, and we terminate the account. We do not publish a count, because the number can compromise an investigation that is still open.

When this page changes

This page is updated when we first act on a report, and once a year after that.

Acting on a report means we forwarded a copyright notice, took an action under the Acceptable Use Policy, or complied with a law enforcement request. A report that reaches us and turns out to be spam, a mistake, or something we correctly took no action on does not start the clock, and does not change the figures below.
